Custom 455 vs Custom 450: A Deliberate Strength Upgrade Within the Same Alloy Family
Custom 455 (Carpenter Custom 455, UNS S45500) sits directly above Custom 450 in the same precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless family, and understanding the relationship between the two grades is essential to specifying either one correctly. Both share a chromium-nickel-copper martensitic base and a low-carbon composition that supports weldability in the solution-annealed condition, but Custom 455 was developed specifically to push achievable strength beyond what Custom 450's copper-based precipitation-hardening mechanism can reach, by adding titanium to the alloying chemistry — a compositional change with a specific, real metallurgical purpose rather than a marketing refinement.
The mechanism behind this strength increase is the aging reaction itself: Custom 450 develops strength primarily through a copper-rich precipitate (with columbium additions supporting the reaction), while Custom 455's titanium addition forms a nickel-titanium intermetallic precipitate during aging that is a considerably more potent strengthening mechanism. The practical result is that Custom 455, aged to its H950 condition, commonly reaches ultimate tensile strengths in the 220-235 ksi range, meaningfully above Custom 450's roughly 170-190 ksi ceiling in its H900 condition — a genuine strength advantage of real engineering consequence for weight-constrained, high-load applications. This higher strength does come with a tradeoff: Custom 455 at its higher-strength aging conditions generally exhibits somewhat reduced ductility and impact toughness compared to Custom 450 at comparable relative aging conditions, and the titanium-based precipitation reaction is more sensitive to aging temperature and time control, requiring tighter process discipline to develop consistent, repeatable mechanical properties.
This strength-versus-toughness-and-process-sensitivity tradeoff is exactly what should drive the choice between the two grades rather than defaulting to whichever alloy sounds more advanced. Aerospace fasteners, landing gear hardware, and other high-load structural components where the design genuinely needs strength beyond Custom 450's ceiling are the applications where Custom 455's premium is worth paying; components where Custom 450's lower peak strength is already sufficient are generally better served by its somewhat more forgiving toughness margin and lower sensitivity to aging process variation. Both alloys retain the family's characteristic weldability advantage in the solution-annealed condition, distinguishing both from higher-carbon precipitation-hardening grades like standard 17-4PH.
