SAE 4140 chromium-molybdenum steel is arguably the most important alloy steel in the engineering world. You find it in oil field equipment in the Middle East, hydraulic cylinders on construction sites across India, gear shafts in agricultural tractors, and pressure flanges in chemical plants on every continent. The reason is straightforward: 4140 offers a compelling combination of strength, hardenability, machinability, and cost that no other alloy steel has matched at scale. The oil & gas sector is among the most demanding customers for 4140 forgings. Drill collars, tool joints, and crossover subs operate in corrosive downhole environments under combined torsional, axial, and bending loads. API 7-1 specifies tight hardness bands and mandatory ultrasonic inspection for these components — requirements we meet with full API-format documentation. For surface wellhead and tree components under API 6A, our ASTM A182 F42 flange forgings come with 100% MT inspection, hydrostatic test capability, and EN 10204 3.1 certificates. Automotive and hydraulic applications represent another major segment. Commercial vehicle transmission shafts, PTO shafts, prop shaft yokes, and hydraulic cylinder rods in 4140 Q&T are core products from our Shapar plant. The Q&T condition at HB 280–320 gives you a shaft with enough strength to handle the torque, a surface hard enough to support oil film lubrication, and machineability that keeps downstream tooling costs reasonable. If you need induction hardening of journals after machining, 4140 responds well to induction hardening to 55–58 HRC without the risk of cracking that higher-carbon grades bring.
Our billet sourcing discipline directly affects your product quality. We buy 4140 from SAIL's Durgapur plant, Tata Steel's special product range, and Mukand Special Steels — all with fully traceable heat-number certificates. No generic or unbranded billet enters the press shop. This matters when your customer requests traceability to the original steel maker's cast, as international buyers and oil field operators increasingly do. We hold the mill certs on file and can produce them at any time during the supply chain audit.
