Same Family as the Cam Follower, But a Different Part With a Different Adjustment
Few words in valvetrain engineering cause as much genuine cross-talk between engineers as 'tappet,' and the confusion is worth resolving directly rather than papered over, because sourcing conversations go more smoothly once both sides know which specific part is being discussed. In much Indian, British-influenced, and heavy-duty diesel engineering usage, 'tappet' functions as a general umbrella term for whatever component rides on the camshaft to actuate a valve — the same functional role our cam follower page describes in general terms — and phrases like 'tappet clearance,' 'tappet cover,' and 'setting the tappets' remain completely standard nomenclature in Indian automotive and industrial diesel service literature, regardless of the precise mechanical form of the follower underneath the cover.
Used with more mechanical precision, though, 'tappet' identifies a specific component form distinct from a roller follower or a hydraulic lifter: a cylindrical bucket or plunger element sliding in a guide bore machined directly into the engine block or cylinder head, contacting the cam lobe at its base and, at its opposite end, either contacting the valve stem directly or seating a pushrod that carries the motion up to an overhead rocker arm. Many of these designs, particularly on heavy-duty diesel and industrial engines, include a threaded adjustment screw and locknut built into the tappet or its associated rocker arm assembly, allowing valve clearance to be manually measured and reset during scheduled maintenance — the literal 'tappet setting' procedure that remains standard, designed-in maintenance on a great many diesel engines in service today, in contrast to hydraulic lifter designs that self-adjust clearance automatically and eliminate the manual step entirely.
This mechanical distinction has real forging engineering consequences. Where a roller follower's design centers on bearing precision and rolling contact geometry, a bucket tappet's design centers on guide bore sliding fit — precise cylindricity and diameter control that keeps the tappet from tilting in its bore, which would otherwise cause uneven base-face wear against the cam lobe — combined with a case-hardened base face engineered for the same sliding-contact Hertzian stress considerations that apply to any follower design, plus, where an adjustment screw is present, forged grain flow and dimensional integrity carried through the screw boss to withstand repeated thread loading across years of periodic clearance re-adjustment.
