A radiograph is only as useful as the interpretation applied to it, and interpretation is a distinct, learned skill separate from producing a technically well-exposed image. The reader's task is to translate variation in film or digital image density into a specific, defensible judgment about what's actually present inside the component — distinguishing porosity from inclusions from larger voids, and separating all of those from the normal density variation that a part's own geometry produces independent of any discontinuity at all.
Each common discontinuity type tends to produce a recognizable, if not always immediately obvious, signature on a radiograph. Porosity generally shows as small, rounded, often clustered low-density spots. Inclusions tend to appear irregular or elongated, with density that varies depending on the inclusion's composition relative to the surrounding metal. Larger internal voids or shrinkage cavities show as more extended, irregular low-density regions, with shrinkage specifically often displaying a distinctive branching or feathered edge pattern that experienced readers use to distinguish it from simpler gas porosity. Recognizing these signatures reliably takes training and repeated exposure to real examples, which is why formal NDT personnel qualification for radiographic interpretation exists as a distinct certification track.
Just as important as recognizing genuine indications is correctly ruling out what isn't one: legitimate part geometry like thickness transitions and fillets naturally alters local film density, and film handling, processing, or digital detector artifacts can superficially resemble a real discontinuity to an inexperienced reader. A qualified interpreter accounts for the part's actual drawing geometry, verifies image quality indicator sensitivity before relying on the radiograph at all, and compares ambiguous indications against reference radiographs or calls for a repeat exposure rather than guessing — this discipline is what keeps radiographic interpretation a reliable inspection method rather than a subjective one.
