Swivels — Managing Rotation Without Introducing Torsional Load Into the Rigging System
Swivels solve a specific and genuinely important mechanical problem in lifting and rigging systems: without some means of allowing rotation, a suspended load that rotates during handling — which happens routinely in real-world crane and hoisting operations, whether from load asymmetry, wind, or operator-induced spin — progressively twists the wire rope or chain supporting it, accumulating stored torsional energy that can eventually cause kinking, birdcaging (wire rope strand separation), or unpredictable and sometimes sudden load behaviour as the accumulated twist releases. A properly engineered swivel absorbs this rotation at a dedicated bearing interface rather than allowing it to accumulate in the rigging line itself.
The engineering challenge in swivel design is achieving reliable rotation without compromising the component's equally important structural role: a swivel sits directly in the load path of whatever lift it's used for, meaning its bearing and body design must simultaneously deliver smooth, low-friction rotation and the full structural load-bearing capacity its rated working load limit promises — two requirements that don't naturally reinforce each other and require genuine engineering attention to satisfy simultaneously, rather than optimizing rotational smoothness at the expense of structural margin or vice versa.
Swivel hoist rings represent a particularly widely used swivel application, combining a bolted mounting base, a rotating ring body, and typically a pivoting bail into a single lifting point assembly that can be permanently or semi-permanently attached to equipment or fixtures requiring repeated lifting — the rotating ring accommodates sling twist during each lift cycle, while the pivoting bail allows the lifting attachment point to align naturally with the actual rigging angle rather than forcing a fixed geometric relationship between the load and the crane hook.
