Verifying the Part Actually Matches the Drawing — Not Just Assuming It Does
Every engineering drawing carries an implicit assumption that the manufactured part will actually conform to its specified dimensions and tolerances — but this conformance is never automatic or guaranteed simply because a manufacturing process is generally capable of producing accurate parts. Forging, heat treatment, and subsequent machining operations each introduce some degree of process variation, and while a well-controlled manufacturing process keeps this variation within acceptable bounds for the overwhelming majority of parts produced, dimensional inspection is the specific verification step that confirms this for each individual part or production lot, rather than treating general process capability as a substitute for actual measurement.
The specific inspection method applied depends meaningfully on what's being verified: straightforward linear dimensions might be adequately verified with traditional hand gauges, but geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) callouts like position, flatness, or concentricity require the more sophisticated measurement capability a coordinate measuring machine provides, since these geometric relationships often cannot be practically or accurately assessed with simple hand tools. 3D optical scanning adds a further capability layer, capturing dimensional data across an entire component surface for comparison against the CAD model — valuable when the inspection question is less about specific discrete dimensions and more about whether the part's overall form matches design intent across its full geometry.
First article inspection occupies a particularly important role in new component qualification: rather than only inspecting ongoing production parts, FAI applies comprehensive dimensional verification to an initial production part specifically to confirm the manufacturing process, tooling, and procedures are actually capable of producing a conforming part before committing to full production quantities — catching a systematic tooling or process issue at the first-article stage is dramatically less costly than discovering the same issue after a full production run has already been completed with the same underlying problem.
