Wheel Spindle Manufacturing: From Forging to h6 Bearing Seat
The wheel spindle is the most precision-sensitive forging on a trailer or dead-axle assembly. Every other component — hub, brake drum, bearing, wheel — is assembled onto or around the spindle. If the spindle's bearing seat is out of tolerance, the bearing will not press fit correctly, will run eccentrically, and will fail early. If the spindle material is under-strength, it will fatigue crack at the radius behind the bearing seat — typically at around 300,000 to 500,000 km, which is well within the expected life of a commercial trailer. Forging is not optional for this component: the directional grain flow produced in the closed die is what gives the spindle its bending fatigue resistance.
Our machining capability is what converts a forging into a precision spindle. CNC turning of the bearing seats to h6 tolerance requires a stable, rigid turning centre with a calibrated tool wear compensation system — not a general-purpose lathe running by operator feel. We hold h6 on bearing seats up to 100 mm diameter, verify with a calibrated bore gauge after turning, and include dimensional data in the batch certificate. Thread ends — metric or UNF — are turned and verified with ring gauges, not assumed correct by the setup. ABS sensor ring recesses, castle nut slots, and cotter pin holes are machined in the same CNC program as the bearing seats to ensure concentricity.
Grade selection depends on the load your spindle carries. C45 normalised is adequate for light agricultural trailers running at low speed with loads below 2 tonnes per spindle. Step up to EN19T (42CrMo4) for standard trailer axles, LCV dead axles, and most agricultural implement applications — 900 MPa UTS gives a comfortable fatigue margin at typical axle loads. EN24T (SAE 4340) is used for heavy-duty construction trailers, lowbed equipment carriers, and any spindle where the section size is above 60 mm and through-hardening integrity is critical. We do not apply a single grade to all applications; we advise based on your load case or BIS/OEM specification.
Quality controls on wheel spindles are not negotiable. Magnetic particle testing on 100% of trailer-class spindles is our standard — any linear indication at the radius behind the bearing seat is reject cause, not a concession. Hardness surveys at three positions along the length (shoulder, mid-shaft, thread end) confirm that heat treatment has penetrated uniformly. Material test certificates covering tensile, proof, elongation, and Charpy impact accompany every batch. For OEM customers requiring PPAP, we supply capability data on bearing seat diameter from the first production run, typically showing Cpk above 1.67 on the h6 feature.
Shivam Forge supplies wheel spindles to trailer manufacturers, axle beam assemblers, and agricultural equipment OEMs across India. We also export to customers in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East where trailer and agricultural equipment manufacturers source precision-machined forgings from India.
