Outokumpu's Tornio stainless steel complex is one of the most technically impressive industrial facilities in Europe: it begins with chromite ore mining at Kemi mine (2 million tonne/year ore — the only European chromite mine), processes it through a ferrochrome smelter (240,000 tonne/year Cr in ferrochrome) into the stainless steel melt shop (three 150-tonne AOD converters plus EAF), through 7-stand Steckel hot rolling mill, two tandem cold rolling mills, continuous annealing and pickling lines (CAPL), and Sendzimir rolling mills for high-precision 0.1 mm gauge 316/304 stainless. The rolling mill infrastructure requires forging replacements continuously: hot mill work roll journals in high-chrome alloy (27% Cr cast iron — Rm 600 MPa, 65–75 Shore D hardness, 40-tonne rolls), Sendzimir backup roll (intermediate roll) forgings in M2 high-speed steel (W6Mo5Cr4V2, 63–65 HRC, maximum 8m roll body length), and cold mill backup roll body forgings in 55NiCrMoV6 (Shore 55–65 HSD). Neste's Porvoo refinery — 30 km east of Helsinki — is one of Europe's most sophisticated refineries and the world's largest renewable fuels production facility: total capacity 196,000 bbl/day including 3.3 million tonne/year of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) and SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) production from waste fat, recycled cooking oil, and fish oil feedstocks. The HVO hydrotreatment process operates at 300–380°C and 60–80 bar hydrogen pressure, requiring precision forgings in P91 (9Cr-1Mo-V, ASTM A182 F91) for reactor inlet and outlet nozzles, P22 (2.25Cr-1Mo) for pre-heater exchangers, and ASTM A182 F316L stainless for cold-side flanges and cooler nozzles.
